An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the richter scale struck West Sumatera on the 30th of September 2009 approximately 57 km Southwest Pariaman. The quake has caused serious human casualties (more than 700 persons) and damage to the city of Padang and Pariaman regency. A number of houses, hospitals, schools and government building were severely hit. National Body of Disaster Management (Badan Nasional Penanganan Bencana - BNPB) c.q. the Center of Operation for Disasters (Pusdalops Penanggulangan Bencana – Satkorlak PB) and Department of Health Crisis Centre (PPK Depkes) coordinate and conduct the disaster relief operation of the victims on site. For this reason, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia has also established the Crisis Centre at the Embassy in The Hague. The Centre will be responsible for providing information, channel humanitarian assistance from the people or organizations in Netherlands and assist journalists/ NGO access to West Sumatera.
