SUPPORT FOR DISASTER RELIEF IN INDONESIA Earthquake and Tsunami in Mentawai Islands On October 25th, 2010 at 14:42 GMT or 21:42 Western Indonesian time, an earthquake at 7.2 Richter Scale struck the region of Mentawai Islands at 3.61 South Latitude (SL) - 99.93 East Longitude (EL) at a depth of ca. 10 kilometers. As a result, a three meters high tsunami wave surged and overflowed 400 meters to the mainland. Aftershocks occurred several times, including a 5.4 Richter Scale quake on the 26th of October 2010, at a location 42 km south of Sipora Mentawai, West Sumatra with a depth of 13 km. According to the latest report on the 3rd of November 2010, 428 people have fallen victim to this disaster and 74 are still missing. Since the disaster in Mentawai is categorized as a local / regional event, relief activities are therefore managed by the West Sumatera’s Regional Government. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other concerned ministries have appointed teams to support the relief activities and monitor the updated situation on location. Merapi Volcano Eruption in Yogyakarta and Central Java The eruption of the Merapi volcano, located in Yogyakarta and Central Java, produced hot clouds of up to 600°c, lava, ash and toxic gas and has caused human casualties and immense loss of properties. The eruption, which began on the evening of 26th of October 2010, is predicted to escalate and still poses great danger to thousands people living around the volcano. The disaster has thus far claimed 42 lives and displaced 75.770 people. The refugees are currently staying in makeshift shelters camps with unsuitable living conditions.
